Tiger Milk Mushroom (TMM) or Lignosus rhinocerus is a renowned medicinal mushroom traditionally used by the natives and indigenes with the history of usage that can trace back to almost 400 years ago.
Numerous names have been given to Tiger Milk Mushroom by the locals including cendawan susu harimau, betes kismas, hurulingzhi, and hijiritake. The name came from a folklore where this mushroom was grown from the spot where the milk of tigress has dropped on the ground.
Wild tiger milk mushrooms are rare and challenging to source. The mushroom’s most potent bioactive compounds are primarily found in the sclerotium, a dense underground tuber-like structure. When tiger milk mushrooms sprout and develop above the ground, nutrients in the sclerotium can diminish, impacting the health benefits.
The Structure of Tiger Milk Mushroom
A full-grown tiger milk mushroom can be separated into few parts namely the cap, stalk, and sclerotium. The sclerotium is located underground where the majority of the medical value is found with.
It only sprouts and emerges above the ground when the environment and condition is optimum, thus making the harvesting process in the wild extremely challenging.
Additionally, the nutrients in the sclerotium will be used for sprouting cause the mass and bio-actives of harvested wild sclerotium to vary.
